Military System Inception


Builders, hello.
February marked the first official inception phase of the military system, and I want to share what I explored, what I validated, and what comes next.
This month was not about shipping the full feature. It was about building the foundation correctly so the system feels strategic, readable, and performant inside the city simulation.
What I Worked On
- Defined the core military fantasy for the game: defense and response integrated with city growth, not a separate combat minigame.
- Established early system pillars:
- Clear unit roles
- Deterministic simulation-friendly behavior
- Strong ties to roads, housing, and labor
- Scalable performance for larger populations and maps
- Prototyped early flow from "threat appears" to "response is dispatched."
- Evaluated manager boundaries so military logic can plug into existing game systems cleanly (without creating cross-system chaos).
- Drafted first data models for units, duties, and incident response state.
Military Production Chain (First Inception)
The military economy is being built around a clear logistics chain with storage support via a warehouse.
- Copper Mine + Charcoal Pit -> Bronze Foundry -> Royal Arsenal (Weapon Smith) -> Recruiter -> Swordsman Barracks and/or Archer Barracks
This setup is intended to make military strength depend on your full city economy, not just one building.

Design Direction (Inception Scope)
The current direction is to make military gameplay feel like a city management decision layer:
- You prepare capacity ahead of time.
- You choose priorities when pressure appears.
- Response quality depends on infrastructure, staffing, and timing.
That means roads, population, and service coverage matter as much as unit stats.
Early Technical Notes
- Focused on simulation-safe structure first, visuals later.
- Prioritized predictable update flow and low-overhead data access.
- Started with simple logic paths before introducing heavier optimization and job paths.
- Began identifying hooks for save and load, UI feedback, and event-driven notifications.
What Is Not Final Yet
- Unit roster and exact role list
- Threat types and escalation rules
- Progression and balance values
- Final UI and UX for military commands
All of these are currently in active iteration.
What Is Next (March Goals)
- Expand the prototype into a playable vertical slice
- Add first pass of player-facing controls and feedback
- Wire military dispatch into broader incident systems
- Start balance testing for response timing and coverage tradeoffs
- Share first in-editor or demo footage if milestones stay on track
Enemy Spawning and Threat Types (Planned)
Enemies are planned to spawn from outside the playable city area, entering through off-map routes (desert approaches, road entry points, and possible river or coastal entry points).
Historically inspired attacker pools around Ancient Egypt may include:
- Libyan desert raider groups
- Nubian and Kushite raiding forces
- Levantine raiders (including Canaanite and Shasu-inspired groups)
- Sea Peoples-inspired coastal invaders (for suitable map scenarios)
These are design inspirations and may be adjusted for gameplay balance and readability.
Thanks for all the feedback so far. February was about getting the core architecture right so future iterations are stable and fast. March is where this starts becoming more visible and interactive.
